Ingevity partners with DeRidder area schools to engage future scientists

PRESS RELEASE

DERIDDER, La., April 21, 2017 – Ingevity recently partnered with three local schools to boost student engagement in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM): Carver Elementary School, DeRidder Junior High School and Pinewood Elementary School. In conjunction with school officials, Ingevity employees hosted a math and science night, including a math competition.

“We have a vested interest in the development of children in our community. By sparking a passion for STEM fields at a young age and growing that interest in the latter years of their education, we can share opportunities and career paths – right here in their hometown – our youth may not have known existed,” stated Danny Kyle, plant manager of Ingevity’s DeRidder facility.

On math and science night at the elementary schools, Ingevity employees demonstrated how to find the pH of a substance, different states of matter, chemical changes associated with gas evolution, optics, kinetics, reversible reactions, acid-base chemistry and density, through a variety of experiments with students.

By hosting the math competition at the junior high school, students solved mathematical equations in a timed setting – teaching them how to think under pressure while competing amongst their peers. Each round of the competition focused on speed, accuracy, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning and collaboration.
