Pavement Preservation > Chip Seal

Overview

Nothing says a road is on the decline like the beginning of surface distresses such as raveling and cracking. Chip seals - when performed early in a road’s lifespan (usually one to four years after newly paving) - can extend the life of the pavement by 10 years or more by preventing water intrusion to underlying layers, sealing surface cracks, and improving skid resistance.

What types of roadways are good candidates for a chip seal application?

  • Cracking is neither spalling nor popping out
  • There is no rutting
  • Ride quality is acceptable

Why use chip seals?

  • Save money
  • Fill narrow cracks
  • Produce a safe, frictional surface
  • Prevent water damage to sublayers
