Warm mix keeps winning in South Carolina

Mar 03, 2021

The South Carolina Asphalt Pavement Association recently presented its 2020 SCAPA Quality Pavement Awards at the 2021 SCAPA Virtual Winter Conference, held on January 19-20, 2021.

  • The Green Construction Award – Sloan Construction and SC DOT District 3 received this award for the use of sustainable practices in work performed on I-385 rehabilitation in Greenville, South Carolina. The total asphalt mix placed, using recycled asphalt pavement, was roughly 166,000 tons. Just over 50% of the total tons placed utilized Evotherm in SCDOT’s Intermediate B Special warm mix. This project is deserving of a Green Construction Award for its use of sustainable practices in the construction of an asphalt pavement.
  • The Project Delivery Award – King Asphalt and SCDOT District 3 received this award for work performed on Highway 123, with cold in-place recycling/rehabilitation using Evotherm in SCDOT’s Intermediate B Special warm mix. This project is unique due to it being the first use of the cold in-place recycling process on an SCDOT road. Additionally, this was one of the first projects in the U.S. to recycle a roadway using the cold in-place recycling process at a depth of 8 inches.

These awards are just two examples of the increasing interest in sustainable construction amongst agencies.
