Arizona DOT Trials

Nov 02, 2011

On October 10, 2011, McCormick Construction Company produced and paved for one of three Arizona DOT WMA pilot projects. AZDOT is gathering information and data for the development of their WMA specifications. This project evaluated Evotherm, Sasobit, and Advera Foam. McCormick Construction produced and placed the 19.0-mm, dense graded, 15% RAP, PG70-10 mix. Valero blended Evotherm into the asphalt at the terminal. The job site was on Highway 93 outside Kingman, AZ, approximately 10 miles from the plant and just off historic Route 66.

The plant produced the mix at 265-260F and temperatures measured 240 F behind the screed, which is a 40-50F temperature drop from standard HMA temperatures. After compaction, two CAT rollers achieved passing density that was comparable to the HMA control. The mat locked up nicely, producing a good looking road. This is the first of the three projects to be completed using Evotherm in AZ to help in the creation of WMA specifications. Stay tuned for futher project bulletins.
