GHS global implementation status
Dec 05, 2019
As GHS (the Globally Harmonized System) continues to evolve (it is updated by the UN every two years), it’s important for countries to stay up-to-date with highlights of the country-specific variations that may impact your business. Established in 2003 by the UN, this regulation includes criteria for the classification of health, physical and environmental hazards, as well as specifying what information should be included on labels of hazardous chemicals as well as safety data sheets.
When countries adopt GHS, they need to decide which version to adopt. The outcome of this is countries with similar, but not identical regulations. For an update on specific country implementation statuses, view this recent Quantum Compliance article here.
Why should you care?
Although GHS is certainly global, it’s far from ‘harmonized’. Since countries adopt variations of the regulations, it’s vital to understand how the evolving criteria can effect your business.
