Water, Food & Beverage Purification

Overview

Our sustainable, powder-activated carbons have helped purify an array of food, water and chemical products since 1913, including:

  • Foods and beverages
  • Municipal and point-of-use water treatment
  • Decolorization, deodorization and contaminant reduction of chemicals and catalysis
  • Pharmaceuticals

Nuchar® powdered activated carbons’ extraordinarily large surface area and pore volume make it the product of choice for liquid-phase purification in batch and continuous dosage applications.

Its controlled porosity and particle size distribution results in:

  • Fast kinetics
  • High capacity
  • Good settling and suspension characteristics
  • Low-pressure filtration

Available in a variety of grades, Nuchar® powdered activated carbons are offered in a range of particle size distributions, surface chemistries and purity levels – many meeting the standards of the Food Chemical Codex and certified NSF/ANSI 61 and 42.

Our Covington, Va., Wickliffe, Ky., and outsourced locations have Ifanca Halal Product Certification and Star-K Kosher Certification.

Managing Cyanotoxins in Drinking Water: A Technical Guidance Manual for Drinking Water Professionals
American Water Works Association - September 2016
This Water Research Foundation Manual mentions that "Both the microcystins and cylindrospermopsin can be absorbed by activated carbon with high mesopore capacity (i.e., pores between 2 and 50 nm) (Newcomb 2008)." Nuchar chemically activated wood base carbons have much higher mesopore capacity than other types of powdered activated carbons typically available for use in drinking water treatment. Collins Park WTP HAB Short Term Solutions and Beyond - Taming the Creature(s) from the Blue Green Lagoon
Ohio Section: American Waterworks Association Newsletter - Spring 2016
The City of Toledo, Ohio uses Nuchar powdered carbon for its water treatment and control of algal toxins. Ingevity's Nuchar was used in the microcystin removal jar testing data shown in the article. Read the article.

Developing a Standard Operating Procedure for Cyanobacteria Bloom Response
Ohio Section: American Waterworks Association Newsletter - Winter 2015
A Jar testing of 8 different types of powdered activated carbons "showed that a wood based PAC had the highest toxin removal rate." The carbon used in the testing was Ingevity's Aqua Nuchar. Read the article.
